How To Start A Blog – Free And Simple!
If you are anything like me, when you decided you wanted to start a blog, you were totally lost. You had NO IDEA where to begin.
While this is totally understandable, the process of starting a blog is actually MUCH easier and quicker than you might think.
In this article, let’s look at how to start a blog, free and as simple as following 4 easy steps!
1. Choose A Niche
Now, don’t misunderstand. Beginning a blog is very simple, and through a web hosting platform even MORE simple. But. It does take work and patience to transform your website into a functioning business that earns a good deal of money.
You will want to keep this is mind as you choose a niche.
A niche is a product, service, or interest that appelas to a small, specialized section of the population.
In other words, it’s something that you are passionate about (or don’t mind researching), that you could write a few words about while promoting said niche at the same time.
I’ll give you an example.
One of my websites (yes, you can have as many websites as you can keep up with!) primarily focuses on beauty. ?
Beauty is a pretty broad niche, and it’s my opinion that you need to narrow it down as much as possible in order to attract a certain audience. So, I write about very specific subjects.
I might write a review on a lipstick one day, listing its name, shade, and tons of pictures. This will attract people who are ready to purchase the lipstick, and they will likely purchase through a link on my website if they found the review helpful, but we will cover that more in a bit :).
The next day, I could write an article on gray hair, and snuff out the myths associated with it. This will attract a certain section of people…specifically the ones who woke up and found a gray hair when they looked in the mirror.
To choose a niche, you will need to really think. Think about what you enjoy doing. Traveling? Crafting? Working on cars?
What types of products are you interested in? Camping equipment? Woodworking materials? Essential oils? Musical instruments?
The possibilities are seriously ENDLESS. No matter which niche you choose, there will undoubtedly be a lot of people searching the internet for items relating to your niche on a daily, hourly, minutely (is that a word?) basis.
If you don’t believe me, check out http://www.internetlivestats.com/google-search-statistics/ to see the statistics for yourself.
There are an average of 40,000 Google searches PER SECOND each and every day. The odds of your blogging website getting visitors, based on these statistics, is obviously very high.
And listen, THERE IS NO WRONG NICHE!
Don’t make it complicated or overthink it. If you are interested in something, chances are, so are many other people.
Make a list of all of the potentials that come to mind, and work on narrowing them down as you do research.
Remember as you are choosing that your primary purpose will be to educate and help people within your niche. Therefore, you have to have a desire to be informative and helpful as much as possible.
Google how profitable certain niches are so that you have an idea of the websites that probably get the most traffic, and how you can leverage different articles to attract traffic.
If you have several ideas, keep in mind that once you have established one website, you can create another.
But like I said, no matter which niche you choose, you really can’t lose.
Click below for a quick tutorial that gives a few tips on choosing a niche:
2. Choose A Platform
This is of the utmost importance. Choosing your web host could set the stage for your success.
A web hosting platform is basically a business that provides the technologies and services needed for your website to be viewed on the internet.
It’s a scary world out there without a web hosting platform. And if you are new to the blogging world, I highly recommend finding one of quality and investing in it.
There are a good many platforms out there, so research is the key here. I have reviewed three of them, so check out these links to view the ratings:
The hosting platform that I chose is Wealthy Affiliate. Check out how it works in the video below.
Within this platform you have access to not only a community of blogging veterans and knowledgeable people, but also to a keyword research tool, countless videos and training sessions, and the ability to ask the founders questions at any time. Pretty cool stuff.
You have to remember that there are several aspects of a hosting service that can make or break it as a sound decision, some of those being:
- The help and support (and how quickly you can receive the help and support)
- The price of membership
- The amount of training and tutorials
- The actual services that the platform provides (Can you buy your domain through it? How difficult is it to navigate and use? Are there any perks or are you just another member?)
- Do you have to sign a contract?
- Can you try it before you buy it?
Set aside time to do research on several platforms, and be sure that you are fully satisfied before signing up for anything.

3. Get A Domain
Once you have decided on your niche (or are at least heading in the right direction), and have chosen and signed up for a web hosting platform, you can now begin the creation of your website! Yay!? The exciting part!
At this point, you need to decide on a domain name, and register that domain.
Depending on your hosting platform, you will likely be able to purchase a domain name through them. Expect the cost to be around $10 – $15 per year.
At Wealthy Affiliate, you can just sign up for a free domain and then purchase your domain name when you are further along. Everything that you have accomplished on your website will move over to your new domain when you purchase it, so you don’t have to worry about that.
When choosing a domain name, be sure to keep it related in some way to the purpose of your website, and be creative!
If you choose a name that has already been purchased by someone else, don’t be discouraged, just move on to option B on your list.
The more creative you are with the name, the less likely it will already be taken.
For example, my website name is Dinosaurs, Dolls, and Dollar Signs. This is not the easiest to remember for other folks, but it significant to me because I have a son and a daughter, and I am creating a better future for them by helping people to become internet marketers.
There is likely a place on your hosting platform’s website that will guide you through registering a domain. It’s very straight-forward, so it shouldn’t take long at all.
4. Create Your Site!
What we have all been waiting for! ?
Each platform is different. On mine, the initial set-up takes about 45 seconds. Depending on how long it takes you to choose your theme.
I hate to be anticlimactic and all, but that’s really all there is to getting your website in place.
You choose a domain name, you choose a title for your website, and you select a theme. Done. Here’s what it looks like on my platform:
When you’re ready, you can immediately start to create content to publish online!
Easy enough, right?!
Here is a video that goes into a bit more detail if you are interested in beginning right away.
Ready, Set, Go!
One of the reasons that i procrastinated setting up a website to blog when I first had the idea was that I really thought it was going to be incredibly difficult.
My background is in the beauty industry. Before beginning this adventure, I knew nothing about setting up websites or blogging. At all.
If I can do it, so can you!
Why wait, when you could begin to earn passive income NOW?
